I agree with Bill Clinton. It is time to have a real fight.

Blu-ray is dead
How do I know Blu-ray is dead as a format? Because the idea of securing a physical manifestation of media, in the year 2010, is close to silly. Between Neflix streaming, Hulu Plus, YouTube, and other Internet streaming capability, video and audio podcasts, and on-demand cable, there is almost nothing that I want to watch or listen to that isn’t available in a non-tangible form. How many hours a day can one reasonably view media anyway? Make of list of what you want to view (in HD or not) and then look around a bit and cross off what is available now online. And what little remaining “content” is unavailable over the Internet will be available within a year or two.
But the clincher supporting the passing of Blu-ray is that even Microsoft thinks Blu-ray is over.
We all should shed a (virtual) tear or two for the end of media crammed into a physical object that one could collect, organize and even take a certain pride in owning. Having shed that tear, we can then rejoice that the media conglomerates will not again be able to charge us a second (or third or fourth) time for the same items we already own but which are merely transferred into a different, and rarely better, tangible container.

iPhone highest rated smartphone
For the fourth consecutive year, the iPhone is the highest rated smartphone in JD Power’s customer satisfaction survey.
For a fourth consecutive time, Apple ranks highest in customer satisfaction among manufacturers of smartphones with a score of 800 on a 1,000-point scale, and performs particularly well in ease of operation, operating system, features and physical design. Motorola (791) and HTC (781) follow Apple in the rankings.
Not surprised.

Market share v. profits (updated)
I have written about this before, but there is some new information out. Once again, in the cellphone marketplace, while Apple has a small share of the total units sold, it has a stunning share of industry profits from cellphones.
For example, … Apple sold 17 million mobile handsets in the first half of 2010, compared with 400 million handsets sold by Nokia (NOK), Samsung and LG. Yet it pulled in 39% of the industry’s profit during that period, more than the 32% earned by the world’s three largest handset makers combined.
Apple is a hardware company that couples sleek industrial design with beautifully designed custom software to sell hardware. Apple successfully crafts devices that are viewed as unique and attractive, thereby allowing the company to play in the (smaller) high end of the space. In another example, Apple has about a 7% unit share of the personal computer market (not counting iPads), yet it earns 35% of the PC industry profit.
Which would you rather have: the biggest share of the profits or the biggest share of the market?
Disclosure: I own Apple stock.
Update: Of course, delivering consumer satisfaction doesn’t hurt either.
