Political quote of the day

Foster Friess

… people seem to be so preoccupied about sex — I think it says something about our culture, we maybe need a massive therapy session so we can concentrate on what the real issues are.  This contraception thing, my gosh, it’s so inexpensive. You know, back in my days, they’d use Bayer aspirin for contraceptives. The gals put it between their knees and it wasn’t that costly.

Political quote of the day

How did American conservatism end up so detached from, indeed at odds with, facts and rationality? For it was not always thus. After all, that health reform Mr. Romney wants us to forget followed a blueprint originally laid out at the Heritage Foundation!

My short answer is that the long-running con game of economic conservatives and the wealthy supporters they serve finally went bad. For decades the G.O.P. has won elections by appealing to social and racial divisions, only to turn after each victory to deregulation and tax cuts for the wealthy — a process that reached its epitome when George W. Bush won re-election by posing as America’s defender against gay married terrorists, then announced that he had a mandate to privatize Social Security.

Over time, however, this strategy created a base that really believed in all the hokum — and now the party elite has lost control.

Paul Krugman, reflecting on the dismal slate of republican candidates for president.

Political quote of the day

We need to let President Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, (audience boos) and my dear friend the chairman of the Democrat National Committee, we need to let them know that Florida ain’t on the table. Take your message of equality of achievement, take your message of economic dependency, take your message of enslaving the entrepreneurial will and spirit of the American people somewhere else. You can take it to Europe, you can take it to the bottom of the sea, you can take it to the North Pole, but get the hell out of the United States of America.

– Rep. Allen West (R-FL).  It does appear, however, that West will be wiped out by redistricting run by Florida republicans.

Political quote of the day

For many right-wingers, Obama was a foreign object, whose unexpected entrance into the body politic activated their immune systems — hence the ‘birther’ movement and other bizarre right-wing obsessions. Whether the right’s aversion to Obama constitutes classic racism is a Talmudic question; what is undeniable is that his race activated a horde of (literally) white cells, rushing to expel the invader. Like organisms, cults always delineate themselves by drawing sharp lines between Us and Them.

Santorum: same sex marriage equals polygamy

Rick Stantorum, speaking to a group of New Hampshire college students today, equated same sex marriage with polygamy.

A real class act. Hopefully he will continue to do well in the republican primaries.

By the way, I suggest that if you are easily offended, you not do a Google search for “santorum” and then click the first link.

Political quote of the day (updated)

Every barrel of oil that comes out of those sands in Canada is a barrel of oil that we don’t have to buy from a foreign source.

Rick Perry, GOP presidential candidate and expert in political geography.

Update: Mr. Perry also acknowledged today that he wasn’t familiar with Perry Lawrence v. Texas, decided by the US Supreme Court in 2003, overruling the state’s anti-sodomy statute, while Perry was Texas governor.

Q and A of the day

On Face the Nation today:

SCHIEFFER: One of the things you say is that if you don’t like what a court has done, that Congress should subpoena the judge and bring him before Congress and hold a congressional hearing … how would you enforce that? Would you send the Capitol Police down to arrest him?

GINGRICH: Sure. If you had to. Or you’d instruct the Justice Department to send a U.S. Marshal.

I am appalled by Gingrich’s reply. Not because it is out of character for him, but rather because I desperately wish him to win the GOP nomination, and this kind of remark doesn’t help.

Shameless

Herman Cain simply will not go away. You can write this down for future reference.

And any purported invocation of Christmas that embarrassingly equates Christmas in America as somehow more important or true than Christmas anywhere is disgusting, for both America and Christianity. As far as I understand Christ, he did not tie his teachings to any political entity, nor did he dole out special treatment for political entities. How could Jesus be anything other than disgusted by Herman Cain?
